China's Internet and eSIM: A Guide to Foreign Tourist Traffic

Buying an eSIM before landing is the most worry free option, and Ctrip and others also sell Chinese eSIMs. Please note that the Chinese firewall blocks some overseas applications. For maps, please use Baidu/Gaode.

It's not difficult to access the internet in China, but there are guidelines on how to do it. Plan ahead and connect to the internet upon implementation.

Four ways to access the internet

  • Buy eSIM before arrival (highly recommended): Airalo, Nomad, Ctrip and other platforms sell Chinese eSIM, which can be installed by scanning the code and used immediately upon arrival. Some packages can be used on LINE/Instagram without having to cross the wall.
  • Domestic purchase of physical SIM: to be processed at the airport or operator's business hall, real name registration is required, suitable for long-term residence.
  • International roaming: High fees, suitable for short stays.
  • Portable WiFi: Shared by multiple people, but requires charging and carrying.

Regarding Network Access

The Great Firewall of China blocks overseas applications such as Google, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X (Twitter), and requires tools to access (generally not recommended for tourists to tinker with). Please use:

  • Maps:Baidu Maps/Gaode Maps/Tencent Maps(Google Maps is restricted in China).
  • Translation: Baidu Translate, Youdao; Or WeChat built-in translation.

Airports and public WiFi

Jiangbei Airport provides AirpoRT-FREE-WIFI, which can be logged in by verifying the phone number; There are also free hotspots in the business district and subway.

Avoiding pitfalls

  • Buy an eSIM before traveling to avoid being unable to receive verification codes when landing without internet access.
  • Confirm that the phone is unlocked and supports eSIM; Dual card users can keep their domestic card for receiving text messages.
  • Pay attention to the battery and data limits for portable WiFi/roaming.
